Chile remembers Gabriel Donoso with a victory
Cartier hosted the 23rd International Day at Guards Polo Club on Sunday 29th July and was delighted to welcome a 25,000 strong crowd to watch Chile beat England to win the Coronation Cup.
An emotional Jose Donoso lifted the Coronation Cup after leading his team to 9-8 win over England on Cartier International Day. The International match was played in memory of Gabriel Donoso, Jose’s elder brother. Just two years earlier, he had led the Chilean team to victory on Cartier International Day, receiving both the Cup and the Most Valuable Player award from HM The Queen.
England started off strongly in the game with James Beim opening the score for England. However by half-time all was level at 4-4. Chile built up a comfortable lead in the second half with both Gonzalez and Donoso scoring in the fifth, creating a three-goal difference. Beim was determined that England should retain the Coronation Cup and scored twice in the sixth to close the gap but England failed to take it to extra time, loosing narrowly to Chile.
